Is it the ability to express ones opinion without fear of reprisals? Or is it the freedom to avoid expressing an opinion at all? This paper considers the many kinds
of freedom and why they are all important. Discussion Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote "Man is born free; and everywhere he is in chains" (Landry 2006). With this apparently contradictory statement, he
introduced his idea of the "Social Contract," one of the most important concepts in Western thought. In his translation of Rousseau, Whitcomb (1899, p. 14) says that the social contract
stems from the fact that "no man has any natural authority over his fellow men, and since force is not the source of right, conventions remain as the basis of
all lawful authority among men." That is, men have to adopt the laws under which they will live, by common agreement (Whitcomb 1899). This is the basis for modern society-the
willingness of the society to give up the right of everyone to act individually in favor of a body of laws that will apply to everyone equally and which it
is agreed everyone will obey. Thus, one of the earliest discussions of freedom is in fact how to curtail it and the reasons for doing so. Within a society of
laws, however, freedoms are granted that form the basis of civilized society. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of information all allow people to contribute to their society
