Thunens RLU Model, 2004). In assessing these elements, von Thunen not only looked at input costs, but also assessed agricultural landscape and the relative costs of transporting agricultural commodities
to a central market area (von Thunens RLU Model, 2004). The use of von Thunens land use model for assessing competitive
location rent and land use asymmetry requires an understanding of the basic elements of von Thunens theory as applied to specific views of land use. In a region of
uniform topography having equal sectors of different land grades based on soil fertility, certain assertions can be made regarding the nature of the land grades (in the example used, A,
B, and C), as well as the costs associated with the production of different crops. The following is a diagram of a circular region of uniform topography with three
different land grades and three different crops cultivated on each of these land grades in sectors: In assessing the competitive location rent for each crop, von Thunen
would consider a number of factors, including the yield per unit of land, the price the farmer receives at market, the average cost of production per unit of yield,
the distance from market and the freight costs for the transportation to market. Assessing the linear rent gradient for a single crop then, would use von Thunens formula of
R=Y(p-c-fm) or RENT is equal to yield multiplied by price received for the crop minus cost minus the total of the freight multiplied by the market distance.
In the model exemplified, there are a number of pieces of information that are not present in order to determine the rent for each crop, though some of the
