fireflies, "With flames so numberless throughout the space/Shone the Eighth chasm" (lines 33-34). Virgil informs Dante that each of these distant flames contains a soul that is eternally bathed in
fire. One of these flames, however, is different from the rest because it holds two souls, Ulysses and Diomed, the Greeks heroes of Homers Iliad. Dante is curious and,
at his request, Virgil addresses the flame and asks Ulysses to relate the story of his wanderings and death. Ulysses complies and delivers one of the noblest speeches of all
the various characters that Dante and Virgil have encountered in their travels through hell. This, of course, brings up the question of why Dante should place Ulysses, a hero from
antiquity, in one of the inner circles of hell. Analysis of this canto indicates Dantes motivation. The canto begins with Dante sarcastically recognizing that the thieves that he has
just seen are fellow Florentines. His sarcasm continues as he praises Florence for earning such widespread fame, not just on earth, but also in hell. His mood quickly changes, however,
as it saddens him to see his city with such a legacy. The first indication of Dantes motivation for placing Ulysses so deep in hell is given prior to Ulysses
speech. "These in the flame with ceaseless goals deplore/The ambush of the horse, that opend wide/A portal for the goodly seed to pass/Which sowd imperial Rome" (lines 59-62). As
this indicates, Dante sees the ruse of the Trojan Horse, which was used by the Greeks to gain entrance to Troy, as deceptive and, therefore, sinful. This was a "dirty"
way to win the war and constitutes part of the reason for Ulysses punishment. The reference to the "goodly seed" refers to the mythology that it was a Trojan, Aeneas,
