Shell Oil Company and Aramco Oil Company are two of the largest petroleum producers and refiners in the world. These companies produce
not only a significant portion of the world oil supplies, they produce natural gas as well. Although these companies are within the same industry, one is privately owned while
the other is government owned. Perhaps even more interesting, however, is the extent to which these companies are tied together in terms of their business ventures in the US.
The thesis can be presented that this interrelationship illustrates the degree to which the US will likely remain securely tethered to foreign control in regard to the need to
satisfy our petroleum dependent lifestyle. It also illustrates the degree to which we may be willing to compromise sensitive environmental areas despite the fact that it will mostly be
foreign entities profiting from that compromise. As its name still suggests, Saudi Aramco (a name that once was an acronym for Arabian American
Oil Company) actually has an American origin. It traces its history back to 1933 and the Standard Oil Company in California. Saudi Arabia granted Standard permission to look
