In recent years, risk-taking behaviors in adolescent populations have been the focus of considerable research. Sexual risk-taking, which can put youth populations at risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases
(STDs) has also been central to efforts to reduce the spread of Chlamydia trachomatis, one of the most prevalent STDs in the Western world. Increased sexual activity among adolescent populations,
especially urban African American populations, has led to the need to address the impacts of sexually transmitted diseases, like chlamydia. Because of the health concerns and problematic long-term health
issues related to the spread of untreated chlamydia, nursing researchers have determined the need to assess risk-taking behaviors, including increased unprotected sexual behavior and sexual activity with multiple partners, and
determine a route for change. At the same time, the assessment of social and phenomenological processes that influence individual choice and risk-taking behaviors are also central to assessing this
problem in youth populations. Theorists have begun to recognize the value of introducing community-based programming to prevent some of the most difficult problems that occur during adolescence. These
problems include adolescent pregnancy and out-of-wedlock births, poor maternal/infant care, problems with disease control and sexually transmitted diseases, and drug and alcohol use (Rubin, Billingsley and Caldwell, 1995). These
problems are especially difficult to address in African American female adolescent populations, and proposals for community-based programming have influenced the study of particular problems, including the spread of STDs (Sexually
Transmitted Diseases). The student must cite as a source in the writing of their own paper, and may not plagiarize any of the material
