many markets (Mintzberg et al, 2003). The services may be seen as meeting the needs of the external market by becoming an intermediary between those who have goods to
sell and those who want to buy goods, especially for niche markets, where goods may not be available in shops. The use of the internet and the undertaking of commerce
on the internet have increased dramatically over the last few years. In the US alone sales on the internet for November/December 2006 was $138 billion, an increase of 22% on
the same period in 2005 (Marcovitz, 2007). This means the company is well placed to take advantage of the increasing use of the internet for sales. The increased ownership of
mobile communications devices has also seen eBay set up a site especially for mobiles (New Media Age, 2006). Ebay have to look for ways of attracting and keeping customers as
more companies are setting up competing sites, for example Amazon marketplace has been successful, allowing consumers and businesses to sell goods directly to Amazon customers with Amazon taking a commission
and acting as an intermediary, in the same way eBay operate. The wider ownership and use of the internet has also seen eBay extend marketing to mass
