the scientific method; the Novum Organum as the way in which the truth could be reached. His theory of idols is seen by many as the first theory of
ideologies (Kenny, 1997). Before this the approach was that of the Aristotelian sciences, but Bacon realised that these were not making any progress and so developed a methodology that was
able to lead to the recognition of clear indisputable conclusion "as if by machinery" (Kenny, 1997). Bacon was of the belief that a mind that functioned normally would make
its way to these truths, but that there were barriers to realising the truths. There barriers he referred to as idols or false images which could fool man or allow
man to fool himself and accept false answers by interpreting and seeing things as they were in relationship to man and themselves rather than as they were in relationship to
the universe as a whole (Muntersbjorn, 2003). It was because of this perversion of perspective that Bacon saw the lack of progress in science which he also interpreted as
meaning intellect was a fallen faculty (Muntersbjorn, 2003). He argued that Induction was the only way to overcome this worship of idols. The advantage of this methodology was
that unlike Aristotelian sciences this was more practical and more certain in the way it was capable of expanding science knowledge (Muntersbjorn, 2003). His approach was to use observation
looking for the facts and gaining knowledge from experience. Bacon argued there were two types of imperatives in any inquiry; the negative imperative and the positive imperative. The negative imperative
is the theory of idols against this is the positive impetrative which is the use of experiences as a knowledge source (Muntersbjorn, 2003). With negative imperatives he argued there
