for Mars exploration, in order to set the groundwork for necessary colonization. The premise of the book is based in the belief that we already have the science and
technology to create manned missions, and that this is evident from the successful application of non-manned programs. The book outlines Mars Direct, Zubrins definitive plan that supports this process,
while demonstrating that this first step will also enhance the technology necessary for creating a Mars colony. Zubrin and Wagner incorporate Zubrins theory of Mars Direct, which begins
with technological innovations for manned Mars space missions through NASA, and demonstrates the way in which these technologies can be utilized as a framework for future colonization. There are
a number of important scientific and technological considerations that are elemental to Mars Direct, including the current data and historical information collected about Mars, the need for technology that supports
both the manned space flight and the return flight, and systems for supplying fuel for the return. Zubrin and Wagner provide a rationale that supports the use of
science and technology, at tremendous cost, to support this type of exploration. Their rationale includes a perspective on the "new" frontier of interplanetary travel and the necessity to explore
the option in order to support colonization efforts that are based on figures that demonstrate the declining stability of Earth. The original plan for Mars Direct utilizes current
space technologies and scientific processes to support extended visits to Mars. One of the most difficult issues to address is the fuel necessary for return trips to Earth.
As a result of this issue, Zubrin and Wagner proposed one essential stage of Mars Direct, the continuos mission proposal. This concept suggests that fuel for return trips can
