into obscurity, Hurstons writings are now making a comeback and finding an audience once again. This paper discusses the way in which Hurstons characters fight to free themselves from
oppression, and do so at any cost. Oppression and Possession Hurston addresses the problem of possession in her works; although she sometimes is dealing with actual possession in
the religious sense, she is most often concerned with the way in which inequality in human relationships lead one person to possess (and oppress) another. Hurston seems to
be unique among "feminist" writers in that her characters often find happiness in traditional heterosexual relationships (though it often takes several attempts) rather than becoming embittered man-haters or actively embracing
lesbianism. There are exceptions of course, and well begin with her short story "Sweat," which chronicles an unhappy marriage and also gives us a basis for investigating her main
theme of the need for freedom from possession. The story is both simply told and highly symbolic. Delia takes in washing to support herself and her husband Sykes, who
doesnt work. He is resentful of the fact that she washes clothes for whites, belittles her for being "skinny," openly takes a mistress; and finally brings a rattlesnake into
the house, knowing it will frighten his wife. In fact, in the first scene of the story, Sykes sneaks up on Delia and tosses his bull whip over her
shoulders, scaring her. One day, Sykes puts the snake in Delias washing basket, hoping it will bite and kill her, but his plan backfires. She sees the reptile
and races from the house in terror, leaving the snake inside but now free of its box. Sykes comes home in the early morning and walks into the house
