as a plea for community awareness and cooperation between the black and white communities. Still later Hurston used white tokens to make political statements about issues such as the
Jim Crow laws and other white enforcement tactics for keeping Blacks in their place. However, Hurstons goal was to provide an enriching view rather than to detract from society
in an overly negative fashion. During the celebration of the Harlem Renaissance, when for a short time African-Americans were affluent and felt free
in American society, Hurston pays little attention to whites at all. For instance, in Spunk, white characters do not exist. In fact, there are no mentions of white
people in the story. The closest we come to a mention of whites is the fact that Spunk is killed by a (most probably) white mans machine.
This story was written in the infant renaissance years when celebrating Black freedom and affluence and community were strong. In Spunk, the
characters are all African-Americans dealing with the issues surrounding their daily lives within an African-American society that is humanistic. In Sweat, white tokens
begin to take on the vestiges of their prior identity to African-Americans. They were the providers of work, that work being very much the same type of work done
by slaves in the South, in this case taking in white laundry. In Sweat, white tokens are not characterized, they exist
as a backdrop for white issues and relationships. They have no speaking roles, they are behind the scenes, but they exist as two entities: the providers of glorious work
