But nonetheless, this type of life had much to be said for it. The children so raised were healthy and tan. They ate the food Gods earth provided for them,
and they spent long periods under the watchful and loving eyes of their parents and extended families. This can not be said for the families who work the mines. This
writer has recently observed a group of women connected with La Voreux Mine. The press of late has been consumed with news of the recent miners strike, and while there
have been reports of the poor living conditions under which these miners have suffered, there have also been many opposing statements by the mining company stressing their assertions that the
conditions of these families are not so poor as the miners themselves make out. What this writer has seen, however, has so forcefully driven him to the miners side that
he must share this evidence with the world. Bourgeois families in nineteenth-century France accept as a given the premise that the father of the family should be engaged in some
sort of enterprise, and his spouses role is to stay home and tend to the upbringing of the children. Children in bourgeois families are generally tutored at home until they
become sufficiently mature to attend school. Thereafter, sons, in particular, are provided the best education money can buy, while females often continue their tutoring at home until they reach the
age at which they may be married. But regardless, it is accepted that in such families, it is the prerogative of the males to provide for the family, and that
