creates for his viewers subtly mirrors the confusion of his protagonist, who cannot discern who is friend or foe in post-World War II Germany. The effect is surreal and almost incomprehensible at times, but the complex cinematography definitely has purpose and creates the psychological environment of the film. Known in Europe as Europa, the film was renamed for distribution in the US in order to avoid confusion with another film. Zentropa takes its name from an extensive German railway network. It tells the story of Leopold Kessler (Jean-Marc Barr), an American of German descent who wants to help the devastated country of his ancestry in some small way. As the film begins, the camera is focused down a set of railroad tracks. As the camera advances along the tracks, more or less, from the point-of-view of a train, Max von Sydow, the films narrator, announces in an hypnotic voice, "You will now listen to my voice. My voice will help you, and guide you deeper into Europa..." This attempt at hypnotizing the viewer may be seen as one of the films overarching themes, as Von Trier pulls his audience into a complex visual labyrinth. There are super-impositions, front and back projection, composite shots, and the use of odd angles that one would not normally expect, such as shooting through water. There is an underwater shot of blood slowly spreading and also an gruesome sequence that recreates what it must be like to drown. Such imagery can be interpreted on multiple levels. The plot suggests that it may signify the lingering legacy and corruption of the Nazi state. After Von Sydows "hypnotic" introduction, the viewer sees a young man, standing behind a fence.
