and now--one breathe at a time. In a society where many people are struggling with the past of their childhoods or bad decisions of yesterday or constantly worrying about the
uncertainty of future, it is no wonder that the Zen meditation philosophy of "living in the moment" is becoming very appealing. Zen mediation
is a practice of Zen Buddhism which is a philosophy of the religion of Buddhism. The word " Zen derives from the Sanskrit dhyana [meditation]" (Columbia) In China, the
school of thought came to be known as a meditative philosophy. Rather than adhere to a particular doctrine or scripture, devotees practice meditation as the major activity. Bodhidharma was
the legendary personage who founded Zen in China. He came from India to China in the late 5th century. This sage taught the practice of "wall gazing" He
also encouraged "consciousness-only" (Columbia). As Zen practice caught on, it added the philosophy of "enlightenment." Enlightenment means seeing in ones "original mind or "original nature" ---which is the spiritual
beginning of all things--the Buddha. And for those in a hurry --there developed the satori-- or sudden enlightenment. It was often the practice to use physical violence to shake the
Zen student out of regular thought patterns. The point of Zen meditation was being therefore "good acts" or "scholarly schooling" were of no spiritual value.
