that its central tenet is the practice of meditation, rather than adherence to a particular scripture or doctrine. The word Zen is Japanese and derives from the Sanskrit dhyana (meditation).
Zazen is a type of meditation, unique to Zen, that is often explained as the study of the self. It is the means to uncovering the mind and understanding who
we really are. For two thousand five hundred years meditation has continued from generation to generation and spread from India to China, to Japan, to other parts of Asia, and
then finally to the West (Anonymous zazen.shtml). Within the Zen discipline there are the sects of Soto and Rinzai. Soto uses zazen, or the sitting meditation, as the principle means
to the attainment of nirvana. Rinzai incorporates the use of koans, or insight riddles, to bring the practitioner to satori, the first step in the process of attaining nirvana.
Meditation is not a difficult thing to do or to learn. Like many other things worthy of becoming a part of the spiritual being, it takes practice in order for
results. Many people see the body as separate from the mind and the functions of living, such as the breath. In zazen they come together as one reality (Anonymous zazen.shtml).
