which many of them wrote, their work reflects this desire for an end to the oppression. El Pachuco in the work, Zoot Suit illustrates this juxtaposition of growing Chicano awareness
and the pent up rage against the system. The character of El Pachuco can be said to be representative of Henrys other self, the side that he is half
afraid of, half proud of. Many times he seems as if he is nothing more than a very angry young man, while at other times there seems to be a
justification behind the rage, the type of righteous indignation that fuels revolutions. It is this religious zealousness that comes through the most as a characteristic of Pachuco. It is evident
that he is in love with the cause and that no sacrifice to him is too great, even if that means Henrys life. For example, he encourages Henry to
stand up to the police and those in authority, but one begins to understand that the underlying motivation for this is not to encourage Henry to be a more confident
or better person, but that he is hoping that Henry will be made a martyr. Another text, by Anaya, is called, Bless Me Ultima. This also illustrates the self-destructive
tendency when one embraces a cause. In Bless Me Ultima the struggle is generational in nature. The older people in the village have grown weary of the struggle and have
allowed the elite to keep them in a state of suppression through superstition and strong-armed tactics. The protagonist, then, a young man, must overcome this to spur on a new
