Protocol is the acceptable procedure that is necessary in order to complete a specified act. Sometimes it takes and individual a significant time investment and concentrated effort to
learn a protocol. Other times it comes almost naturally through innate biological traits. Computers work through protocol also. They
receive, transmit, and process data according to strictly set rules. In telecommunications, for example, files must be transferred to and from in a very regimented manner. Up until
the 1970s, file transfer was accomplished either using straight ASCII or XMODEM protocol. XMODEM was a spin off of the original binary file-transfer program MODEM, written by Ward
Christensen. This program was modified into what we now refer to as XMODEM by Keith Peterson, released August 1977, became the standard protocol for file transfer (Meeks1).
In XMODEM protocol only one computer can send data at a time. This is called "half-duplex". XMODEM sends data in blocks
of 128 bytes at a time. "XMODEM protocol was more than 90 per cent efficient with the 300 bit per second modems then popular with microcomputers. XMODEM obliged
both the sender and the receiver to keyboard a file name, and only one file could be sent at a time. You couldnt go out and have a cup of
