in the alphabet due to a multiplicity of reasons, which are often overlooked or taken for granted by its unappreciative users. Examination of this jewel of a letter, which exemplifies
both phonic and graphic perfection demonstrates that it ranks far above the commonly used letters, which have become mundane through constant usage. First of all, consider the graphic simplicity
of the letter Z, which eschews the roundness of many letters. Composed of a straight-line across; a diagonal that connects the right-hand side of the top line to the left-hand
side of the lower horizontal; and, of course, another horizontal line, it is both direct and elegant in composition. No curly lines, no round evasiveness, Z is forthright in its
graphic honesty. It is impossible to imagine a hero of the people engraving D, G or any other letter than Z on the doors of the enemies of the people.
Furthermore, "Dorro" lacks any sense of adventure and connotes someone with thick glasses and a calculator. "Zorro" has a musical ring that is exemplified in his dramatic signature of Z.
But Z is more than simply flash and heroics. It is also imminently practical. For example, what would daily life be without the Z of Zip Codes. These handy
little designations are all that stands between actually receiving the mail and total chaos. Furthermore, modern life could not function without that wonderful Z concept -- the zero. The
mind boggles at the prospect, which is exemplified by the cumbersome nature of Roman numerals, which did not include this concept. Granted, right at the moment, it is not hard
to use Roman numerals for years, 2005 = MMV. However, can you imagine trying to do math with letters? For example, finding this writers age would be MMV minus MCMLIII
...
