pressure to pursue immoral activities is regarded as a rite of passage. With religion unfortunately losing its influence on many American households, children frequently find themselves turning to substances
like drugs and alcohol to find the spiritual and emotional solace they seek. According to Rafenstein (2002), "During any given 24-hour period, 15,006 American teenagers will use drugs for
the first time" (p. 29). What is most shocking of all is that these teenagers are introduced to narcotics not by strangers, but by the people they call their
friends (Rafenstein, 2002). The inescapable reality is that negative moral influences come not from the media but from youthful peers. There is nothing worse for an adolescent
is feeling that he or she does not belong. That is why many of Americas youth will submit to coercion to experiment with drugs, alcohol, sex or juvenile crime
despite awareness that such behavior is morally inappropriate. Thirteen-year-old Heather, who had witnessed firsthand the ethical conflicts caused by her older brothers struggles with substance abuse, was not herself
immune to adverse moral influences. She explained, "One night I went to a party... Everyone there was drinking. Some kids were smoking dope, too. Though I had
made up my mind not to make the same mistakes my brother made, my friends coaxed me into having some drinks. I kept wanting to say no, but I
was also afraid of getting teased. Its not easy to say no to drugs and alcohol when youre in junior high. Everyone wants to feel included" (Rafenstein, 2002, p.
