people. In reality, however, many of todays youth are anything but fit. For many the activities that traditionally occupied youth have been replaced by sedentary activities like watching
television and playing video games. For many, well-rounded nutritious diets are discarded in favor of fast food, candy, chips and soda. Fast food restaurants are so impregnated into
our cultural landscape that we think nothing about dropping in on a daily basis to pollute our bodies with saturate fats, high levels of sodium, as well as monosodium glutanate,
and other potentially toxic food additives. The concept of fitness encompasses both physical and mental aspects of development and growth.
In the physical realm fitness often gives way to obesity, compromised cardiopulmonary function, muscularskeletal problems and a diversity of other infirmities. Obesity, for example, affects an astounding number of
todays children, some eleven percent of the population in fact (Drohan, 2002). Obesity, or even less extreme cases of excess weight can lead to a number of physiological and
mental consequences, not the least of which are conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, anxiety, depression, and even heart disease. This problem
is one that does not look like it will go away in the near future. It is also an emotionally sensitive problem, an emotionally sensitive problem where even the
choice of words that we use to describe the problem can have negative impacts (Budd and Hayman, 2006). The literature, however, uses the terms "overweight" and "obese" almost interchangeably.
