Been?" are two incredibly different stories from very different times in history. With Hawthornes story we are presented with Colonial Puritan perspectives in a time gone by. In Oates story,
however, we can see incredibly modern items and modern experiences. But, despite the fact that the two are incredibly different, they are both stories which present us with a look
at human nature, human arrogance and assumptions, and most importantly human frailty when faced with a truth of one kind or another. In the following paper we briefly examine these
similarities in the two stories. Hawthorne and Oates In Hawthornes story we are presented with a man who feels he knows life. He is a young man, but
somewhat arrogant and assuming in his nature. He feels that all of his questions are answered through his faith in God. He expects life to be a certain way, and
for the most part it is. He does not see that there are always other ways to examine and understand life. He is, in other words, a very shallow and
assuming man who feels his faith is all that is necessary. In Oates story we are presented with another form of the same sort of assumptions and arrogance. Connie is
a young woman who feels that beauty and frivolity are the most important things in life. She does not see that life is not as simple and easy as she
seems. One could perhaps claim that she was spoiled, or simply shallow in that she never had to do any work and she was allowed to focus on her looks
and not her character. While her story is different than Browns, we see that they are both ignorant about some truths that exist outside their stable presumptuous world. Both
