It is a story filled with very symbolic elements and a story that offers very powerful literal elements as well. With that in mind the following paper examines the literal setting in Hawthornes story, an examination of the allegorically symbolic, and then a look at the irony which takes place in the end of the story. Literal Setting The very beginning of the story sets the reader up with a very simple setting, though a setting that is also incredibly symbolic. "Young Goodman Brown came forth, at sunset, into the street of Salem village, but put his head back, after crossing the threshold, to exchange a parting kiss with his young wife. And Faith, as the wife was aptly named, thrust her own pretty head into the street, letting the wind play with the pink ribbons of her cap, while she called to Goodman Brown" (Hawthorne NA). Putting aside the symbolic for later discussion we see that the literal setting in the beginning is the town of Salem and the presence of Browns wife. In these two simplistic images we have a very innocently seeming setting. We see him leave this simple setting and venture onto "a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind" (Hawthorne NA). This particular aspect of his literal setting, as it involves the darkness and the gloom, continues throughout the story as the further he gets into the woods or the further he gets down the path, the more intensely gloomy things become.
