Dear Mrs. Smith: Thank you for your letter concerning the appropriateness of having The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain on our library shelves (fifth on the
ALAs 200 most frequently challenged books for 1990-2000). I apologize that you felt that your complaint was not being taken seriously when you telephoned. It is part of the librarys
complaint process that phone calls are not considered to be formal complaints, that is, all complaints must be in writing to begin the challenge hearing process, which is a policy
in keeping with that of the American Library Association (ALA) (ALA, 2008). Briefly restating your complaints, you found the context of Twains narrative to be belittling to African Americans,
as you feel that Twain frequently trivializes Jim, a runaway slave, making him an object of ridicule. Primarily, however, you object to the frequent use of a racial epithet. You
expressed your concern that this material would have a deleterious effect on your child and that you feel that this is unsuitable for young adult reading and asked that it
should be removed from the shelves. Thank you very much for voicing your opinion. As a community library that promotes reading, for all age groups, but particularly in regards
to young people, the library staff applauds all parents who are interested and involved in their childrens educational process, and are careful and discerning about their childs reading material, as
well as what they view in the media. Your sensitivity and concern regarding influences on your child is laudable and very much appreciated by the library staff. Enclosed you
