still strange enough to make us think twice about what the author is saying. In addition, and much more important, is the way in which the society of the time
comes through; this is particularly clear in Yoricks reaction to women. We will explore his relationship with some of the women in the novel in this paper. Discussion Some of
the words that come to mind when we read of his interactions with women are "delicate," "chivalrous," and "concerned," not to mention "sentimental." Its hard to tell if hes really
serious in what he writes or if hes sort of putting us on; the book is very odd to a modern reader and his sense of humor is hard to
grasp. That is, perhaps he really does feel extremely protective and at the same time unbearably shy around women; or perhaps hes really making a joke about the whole thing
and he is in fact confident and self-assured. Its impossible to tell, though one passage may give us some inkling that hes putting us on. He describes sitting at
an inn in Calais, France, enjoying a meal, when a Franciscan monk comes in to beg for money for his order. The monk describes the poverty in which he and
the others live, and he "did it with so simple a grace-and such an air of deprecation was there in the whole cast of his look and figure-I was bewitchd
not to have been struck with it" (Sterne). He seems to admire the monks modesty and good humor, and with his honest description of the needs of his order, but:
"I was determined not to give him a single sous" (Sterne). This is very funny, but it has a serious undertone: Mr. Yorick would give the money to help the
