and Destruction Research Compiled by 4/2011 Please
In "Yin and Yang of Continental Crust Creation and Destruction by Plate Tectonic Processes", an article published in a 2010
edition of "International Geology Review", authors Robert Stern and David W. Scholl choose to explain a highly technical geological process by comparing it to the Chinese philosophical concept of yin-yang.
The result is both educational and unique. By merging these seemingly unrelated topics into one discussion, these authors manage to maintain better control on the readers attention span
and their understanding not just of a geological process but of an ancient Chinese philosophy. The primary intention of Stern and Scholls article,
of course, is to delineate the geological processes which have shaped the earth. Subduction is one of the most obvious of these processes. Subduction creates the continental crust
but it can also destroy it. In addition to accomplishing their purpose of educating the reader on the basic processes of
geology, Stern and Scholl (2010) accomplish the ancillary purpose of bettering the readers understanding of the way some eastern cultures view the give and take processes which characterize so much
