spotted Pi and his family out for a Sunday afternoon walk on the seaside esplanade next to the Bay of Bengal. They each desire Pi to acknowledge their faith
as the only correct one, but Pi insists that he cannot accept Hinduism, Christianity or Islam exclusively. When asked to choose, he replies, "Bapu Gandhi said, All religions are true.
I just want to love God" (Martel 66). While previously the three religious men, whom Pi terms the "wise men," were busy trading insults with each other. Amidst frank, overt
animosity, to point out the outstanding commonality between the three religions effectively silenced the "three wise men," who "pulled away with stiff, grudging smiles on their faces" (Martel 67). Pis
father comments, "I suppose thats what we are all trying to do-love God," which greatly surprises Pi who indicates that his father had not "stepped into a temple with a
serious intent since I have had the faculty of memory" (Martel 67). The exchange between the wise men and also his fathers comment about his religious viewpoint holds intriguing
implications about the similarities and differences between religious faiths. The heated debate between the wise men illustrates the major differences between these faiths and how each has a biased view
of the others. The imam says that both "Hindus and Christians are idolaters," as they have "many gods" (Martel 63). The Hindu, the pandit, responds by pointing out that Muslims
