The concept of latency and the development of attitudes towards content, then, appeared to be linked in assessing communications. This study, then, became the basis for considering the nature of
attitudes and the development of attitudes relative to influence or qualifications of the "persuader" (Hovland, Janis and Kelly, 1953). The development of Hovland, Janis and Kellys dissociation hypothesis was
based in the belief that latency impacts communication processes and that the separation between the persuader and the message reduce the impact of the persuader, placing greater emphasis on
the message, rather than the credentials of the person putting forth the message. Specific personality traits were also considered as a component of this study and related the
susceptibility of the person or group being persuaded, the nature or ordering of the arguments, and the emotional elements that impact communication processing. The researchers related the fact that
persuasion can be influenced by a number of external factors and variables which clearly have the potential of changing the way communications are assessed. This study, then, became the
basis for assessing personality traits, characteristics, communication variables and emotional elements as they influence the process of persuasion. Hovland, Janis and Kellys (1953) study can be understood by the
application of some more recent developments in communications theory, including the concept of trait verbal aggressiveness and the role that this plays in determining values placed on communications. Trait
