of the West, Elphaba, is not necessarily an evil individual, or an evil child, but rather a product of her environment and a product of her societys perceptions. The following
paper examines the character of Yackle in this novel, discussing who Yackle is, or may be, and what her role is in the story. Yackle in Wicked by
Gregory Maguire Yackle is a rather allusive character that ultimately defies meaning or description. She is seen towards the beginning, in conversations, as a woman who is perhaps a seer,
or an oracle. She predicted that Elphaba and her sister would likely be very important in history. She is a mysterious woman, an old woman who can barely see, and
yet a woman of some power. She appears to Elphaba after Elphaba has already had many adventures. She, in this portion of
the story, essentially takes Elphaba under her wing to protect her: "Come my precious and all will be well. Rest in the bosom of mad Mother Yackle. Mother Yackle will
see you home" (Maguire 222). She is an old crone in a wheelchair and is apparently deeply concerned for her and thus appears, at this point, to be good. As
such she seems innocent enough, but yet the reader knows that she has a history far deeper than that of a protector of Elphaba.
