The leader of England, Queen Mary I, was in charge and apparently considered a threat for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was her fanatic adherence to the Catholic Church. This was one the primary reasons for the rebellion which Thomas Wyatt led. And, despite the fact that the Wyatt Rebellion ultimately proved a complete failure, the legacy, the threat, of Protestantism seen in this failed rebellion would forever instill fear in Marry and lead to the deaths of many supposed heretics. The following paper examines the Wyatt Rebellion. Wyatts Rebellion In first understanding some of the history involved with this rebellion it seems relevant to discuss the origins of Wyatt. Thomas Wyatt was born in 1521. He was the son of a poet, "Sir Thomas Wyatt (1503 - 1542) who had been implicated, imprisoned, but released, during the terrible days when Anne Boleyn, Elizabeths mother, was arrested and eventually executed for adultery, treason and incest."1 As such it seems he was clearly born into a family wherein political interests and passionate beliefs were important. Another player in this rebellion was Elizabeth. Queen Mary was the queen and as mentioned, a fanatical Catholic. She felt that Elizabeth, her half-sister and thus an heir to the throne as well, was a powerful threat because she was a Protestant.2 Because Mary did not trust her Elizabeth was questioned at Court and then she "retreated to Hatfield away from the intrigues of the court. Elizabeth was the focus of all Protestants and in danger of being implicated in conspiracies to overthrow her Catholic half-sister Mary" and so for a time she kept ...
