is "at will" so that employees should not have the expectation of always having a job. At the same time, there are laws on the books that prohibit certain employment
practices. For example, employers are not allowed to discriminate. Employees cannot be terminated due to anything related to gender, skin color, race, national origin or religion (Larson, 2003). That is
part of an anti-discrimination law from 1964 (Larson, 2003). Age discrimination is also something not allowed under various statutes (Larson, 2003). First, it should be said that any employer may
fire any employee if they are an "at will" employee provided that the employer does not violate the protections already named (Larson, 2003). An example is that an employer can
decide that Johns work is sub-par. John had lied about getting some of the work done. He had also been coming in late, and once he did not show up
at all and failed to call in. John can be terminated and he would have no recourse. Another example of a legal termination is that an employer is cutting back
and must let a number of employees go. The employer is allowed to do this. Under such circumstances, employees who have done nothing wrong can be legally terminated. However, an
employer cannot fire an employee because he or she had to leave early on a religious holiday or because prejudice amongst the staff prompted an employer to terminate a Hispanic
man. The law protects employees from being let go under certain circumstances. Even in the context of layoffs, a company cannot target older workers in order to maximize their interests
