They are situated in a gymnasium as we wait for the photographer to arrive. It is picture day at the preschool. Her almost black hair is indicative of her Russian
ethnicity. Her piercing blue eyes are reminiscent of her grandmothers and in fact, people have told me that she looks very much like my mother. As I observe her activity,
Rachel is sitting up straight, something not seemingly learned, but something that comes naturally to the supple three year old body. Her velvet black dress touches the floor and she
effortlessly sits with her legs stretched out in front of her. Dolores, a Chinese girl with straight black her and narrow eyes, in an awkward position, keeps her right
arm extended in an upward fashion, lest she let the beads fall away to the ground. She is doing a balancing act. She does not look comfortable at all. Her
right arm up, her left knee on the ground with her foot planted firmly on the ground, her position is something reminiscent of what one might witness during a Twister
game. Rachel only stares at the end of the string where she will place a bead. Her gaze is extraordinary. If I clapped very hard, would she hear it? The
concentration--her eyes fixed firmly on the red and white bead--is suggestive of a young mind that his little else to think about, but just then Dolores loses the grip she
once possessed, allowing the beads--yellow, green, indigo, white and red--to fall and dance on the ground. As the beads roll across the floor, Rachel stands up, flails her arms
