And while this bestseller, promoted by Oprah, hit heights in the publishing world, it is not really the magnificent work that the market claims. In truth, the writing style is
rather bland. The writing is good, but it is not polished. It is not above average, and stellar writing is what is expected in a bestselling book. At the same
time, the story is powerful, and to a large extent, this fact mitigates the lackluster writing. Despite the fact that the quality of writing is less than extraordinary, the author
does manage to provide details in a way that is not boring. In other words, the story itself compels the reader to turn the pages. The details help to draw
the reader in. A sample of the writing may help to illustrate the point. Oufkir writes: "Suddenly she appears, the most beautiful of all in my eyes, wearing a white,
low-cut dress that emphasizes the curve of her neck. My heart thumping, I watch her greeting the guests and smiling, kissing friends, bowing her graceful neck before strangers in dinner
jackets" (11). The author describes her mother and again, the descriptive writing is good, but it is not great. Other authors seem to concur. The audio version of this
book is read by Edita Brychta. In Publishers Weekly, Andriani remarks: "Brychtas suave and subtle Arabic lilt perfectly capture this first-person narration" (24). Here, it seems that if the praise
is for the reader and not the author. Then, the critic goes on to discuss the writing style as it appears in the book: "Oufkir worked with Fitoussi to produce
a crisp memoir that bristles with imagery, perhaps owing to Oufkirs continual storytelling in jail to try to keep her familys misery temporarily at bay" (Andriani 24). Of course, it
