Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 6 page essay that contrasts and compares Lorraine Hansberry's play A Raisin in the Sun and Richard Wright's novel Native Son. The writer argues that these are very different narratives in their context and characterization; however, there are scenes in each, where the author and the playwright portray how imagination, the art of daydreaming and speculation, motivates and affects the subsequent actions of each protagonist. These two scenes serve to connect the works thematically, as in both cases, the protagonists' daydreams are set against the backdrop of a racist reality that neither man has ever fully confronted in terms of his own life. Furthermore, both of these male protagonists envision a glorified and ideal future that occurs, more or less, without their active intervention, but rather as something that they can fall into or negotiate by playing the "game," as Wright's Bigger Thomas puts it (Wright 36).
