on. This paper considers the way the form is handled by three authors, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Janet Evanovich. Discussion We begin with Dashiell Hammett and his detective, Sam Spade. Hammett and Chandler both belong to the school known as the "hard-boiled" detective, meaning that their characters are tough. They act tough, they live in a tough world. Theyre comfortable with guns and they can use their fists; sometimes its hard to tell them from the gangsters. But they have a kernel of decency in them that keeps them just slightly on the right side of the law. They also usually have buddies on the police force or adversaries or both; frequently they get crimes solved that have baffled the cops. Sam Spade is all of these. Hes tough and determined, and he knows when hes being played. The Maltese Falcon is one of the all-time great detective novels, and the film adaptation is exceptionally faithful to the book. The film is also often mentioned as being the first of the movies made in the film noir genre. Hammett writes in the third person; the others use the first person. This means that the reader is privy to everything that happens; in first person narration, he sees only what the detective sees, as he or she sees it. Hammett opens his novel with a physical description of Sam Spade, who looks "rather pleasantly like a blond Satan" (Hammett 5). Hammett is a very sharp observer of physical characteristics; he frequently "zooms in" on little things, like Sams "wet yellow face" that was "set hard and deeply lined" (Hammett 222).
