a man" and "Gimpel the fool," respectively. At first glance the two stories seem to have absolutely nothing in common, but deeper examination begins to reveal commonalities. This paper discusses
the similarities between the two characters. Discussion At first its very difficult to see anything similar in the two tales. The situations are entirely different, as are the characters. Richard
Wright tells of a 17-year old black man, Dave Saunders, who wants to buy a gun-a symbol of manhood. He does so, and in a horribly funny scene, accidentally shoots
his masters mule. Singer writes of a man named Gimpel who lives in a small village, and who chooses to believe everything he is told; he believes his wifes child
is actually her brother; and he believes that all the children she bears out of wedlock (its questionable whether or not they ever have sex) are his, even though they
all have different fathers. How then can these two characters be exactly alike? We obviously have to go deeper than actions and situations to find the link: we have to
consider their psychological makeup, the way they interact with other people and the way others treat them. When we do that, we see that they do share one thing: humiliation.
Dave is horrified when he shoots Jenny, but rather than admit what hes done, he makes up some goofy story about her falling and landing on the point of the
plow: " Then when the point of the plow was stickin up in the air, she swung erroun n twisted herself back on it... . She stuck herself n started
t bleed. N fo Ah could do anything, she wuz dead" (Wright). This is so ridiculous that no one believes him; one man says it looks like a bullet hole
