A mosaic of cultural variation is created by the patterning of similarities and differences among groups. Two groups may differ on some cultural variables but not others....Nonetheless, the continuing trend to treat multicultural issues as just a minority racial/ethnic group issue suggests that we have not come far enough. We have not recognized culture as a basic determinant of social communication.2 Despite their palpable differences, myriad cultures come together for the same academic purpose on a university campus, however, they ways in which weave their respective paths through this learning process amidst such cultural diversity can either lend or detract from the overall scholastic experience. Beginning students do not always have a positive attitude toward diversity if they have not come from a previous social or academic setting where this was espoused; if a students worldview is comprised of a shortsighted, intolerant mind-set, university life will most assuredly provide an eye-opening experience whereby the student will hopefully grow amidst the daily occurrence of interacting with such diversity. As Trudgen points out, those who refuse to perceive the world through anything but their own myopic point of view will have great difficulty relating to people outside such stringent boundaries.3 In short, a persons individual social identity does not make him better or worse than anothers, yet if beginning students do not have a broad view of the world around them as they enter university ...
