glance, it may seem that sexuality and religion are two diametrical opposed human concerns, the "physical" versus the "spiritual," or temporal concerns versus eternal (Parrinder 1). Yet, it is also
true that sex and religion constitute two of humanitys most universal concerns and, while they encompass their own terrain, it is also true that issues from each area are always
"crossing the frontiers" of the other (Parrinder 1). Examining the views of a selection the worlds great religions -- Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism--towards pornography suggests that this position derives
from the manner in which each of these religions approaches human sexuality in general. Hinduism and Buddhism Buddhism derives from Hinduism in a manner that is similar to the
way in which Christianity derives from Judaism and both religions find their origin in India. According to Parrinder, there is no society that sees a closer relationship between sex
and religion than the religious orientations found in India (5). The attitudes of Hinduism toward sex range from "full indulgence to ascetic denial" (Parrinder 5). By Christian standards,
the statuettes of "naked or nearly naked women that have been found in India that are dated in remote antiquity would undoubtedly be classified as "pornography" and, in fact, this
was the reaction of Europeans to many aspects of Eastern culture when they first encountered it. However, Parrinder indicates that these statues have a religious purpose and are thought to
be icons of a "Mother Goddess," a deity considered important to female fertility and the health of children (6). Consulting the Internet for how Hindus feel about pornography today,
