Resulting from a variety of causes, World War I spanned a four year period between 1914 and
1918. World War I resulted from a variety of causes. The rise in nationalism, in particular was a cause of the war. People of common geographic origin,
language, and history began to see themselves as members of large cultural affiliations and to unite into nations. Italy and Germany were formed as a direct result of Nationalism.
Tensions in Germany in particular before the outbreak of war were phenomenal. Competition over colonial holdings and other resources led to increased military powers and resentment of competing
powers. The USs entry into a world affair of this scale was an unprecedented development in our history and one that
marked a turning point in the way that we related to the rest of the world. World War I actually represented the ultimate end of the policy of U.S.
isolationism. Our reasons for entering this war were complex but, as then President Woodrow Wilson explained, this war was supposed to make the world safe for democracy. Wilson
believed that all of mankind was entitled to certain God-given freedoms and liberties and basic human rights, the types of rights freedoms and liberties upon which our own country had
