the rise of nationalism. People of common geographic origin, language, and history began to see themselves as members of large cultural affiliations. What had previously been small isolated states of people began to unite into nations. Italy and Germany were formed as a direct result of Nationalism. Competition over colonial holdings and other resources led to increased military powers and resentment of competing powers. By the late 1800s Germany had formed one of the largest and best-trained military forces in the world. Heated interaction and competition over resources began to heighten among the European powers. War ensued and eventually more nations of the world were involved than had been at any other time in history up to that date. The ideological version of World War I was that it was "The War to End All War" and "The Struggle for Democracy". In fact it was a global carnage, not ideologically based at all but instead based on the factor which causes all war, greed. (Pan). Was World War II and the Nazi catastrophe a direct result of the failure in the aftermath of World War I to reconstruct German national identity? Probably. In the socio and political environment that resulted after World War I ended, there was probably even less chance of global peace than existed prior to the war. When the treaties of World War I were signed the aftermath lingered on. Despite the ideologies and dreams of world peace, Germany was forced to abide by terms which left her no National identity and severely handicapped politically and economically, Austria was separated from her mother land, and Turkey, Hungary, and ...
