Asian Americans. However, the unfortunate reality is that these immigrants typically got lumped into one category: that of being Asian, and their distinct races were not readily recognized.
When Asians first began to arrive in the United States, it was primarily Chinese Asians who were coming to this country (Asian American
History, 2004). The Chinese came to America in droves in the early 1800s, and by the 1830s there were huge communities of Chinese individuals in New York City selling
their wares as well as in Hawaii working in the sugarcane fields (Asian American History, 2004). It was in 1850 that gold was discovered in California and this attracted
many Chinese laborers to that region (Asian American History, 2004). By 1860, over 37,000 Asian immigrants entered the United States, and the vast majority of these immigrants were Chinese
(Asian American History, 2004). Therefore, because the population of Asian immigrants was so predominantly populated by Chinese, Americans came to regard
all Asian immigrants as Chinese, and were ignorant to the distinctions among the plethora of Asian countries from where these immigrants began (Asian American History, 2004). Historically, Asians had
been prohibited from becoming citizens in the U.S. thanks to age-old biases and prejudices (Asian American History, 2004). However, it was during World War II that these laws were
repealed which created a huge resurgence of Asian immigrants flocking to the United States because is became far easier to enter the U.S. and to eventually become a citizen (Asian
