When journalists view their own countries from outside, they sometimes find the influences of the country they are in as a means of judging their own views of their country;
other times the views of their own country become stronger because of the comparison with a country they are in. The three journalists presented are all reporting from
cultures significantly different from their own. Each of these "diary" entries provides some insight into a historical aspect of World War II, while also assessing the influence of an
environment, a culture and a social perspective that is defined by both homeland and their political perspective. English Reporter in Moscow Dear Diary:
The past year has challenged my perspective on British dominance and the significance of the monarchy in the greater world order. Though I just recently wrote a
story extolling the virtues of the British military in supporting Russia after the German invasion of 1941, I feel compelled to speak out against a Russia that seems to constantly
be challenged by changing affiliations. Initially, Germany and Russia were allies, wreaking havoc on the allied forces and capturing more than 1.7 million Polish citizens. After facing the
onslaught of German forces, Russia released their prisoners, asking many Poles to come out in force in support of the Russian actions and defense against Germany. My greater question,
then, is how the British have responded. Though my loyalties are clear, I find it hard to understand how governments can be so conflicted; how one moment a country
