This war saw intense bravery, courage, and stamina in the men who would engage in combat and this was particularly true for paratroopers both within the U.S. and in
Germany as well. These men were the elite fighters of the world, and their contributions are clearly evident throughout the history of this war. US WWII Airborne
(Paratroopers) World War II was a devastating war and could easily be considered the greatest cataclysm in history (Butowsky, 2002). Literally,
tens of millions of people died in battle while millions more were murdered because of their religion or their ethnicity (Butowsky, 2002). Furthermore, in terms of lives there were
even more lost who were just innocent civilians and knew little of the war or its purpose (Butowsky, 2002). Clearly, World War II changed the world forever (Butowsky, 2002).
The largest elite unit in the United States armed forces was the airborne (D-Day Introduction, 2002). The idea
originated with Brigadier General William Mitchell, who conceived of the idea of employing parachute troops in combat just prior to World War I (D-Day Introduction, 2002). Although his
idea had a great deal of potential, the war ended before he ever really got to try it out (D-Day Introduction, 2002).
However, when World War II broke out, both the United States and Germany employed such tactics regularly and indeed came to rely on their contributions (D-Day
