first World War, the victorious nations established the League of Nations for two primary purposes: 1.) it was an organization that intended to settle international disputes and 2.) the League
mobilized the members as a collective effort to keep peace if there was any aggression on the part of one nation on another (Esposito, nd). The United States never joined
the League of Nations (Esposito, nd). The League failed in its first effort in 1931 when the Japanese launched a full military operation against Manchuria (Esposito, nd). The League
adopted a resolution in 1933 calling for the Japanese to withdraw; instead, Japan withdrew from the League and the League took no further action (Esposito, nd). It could be
said that the League of Nations lack of influence to stop Japans attack on Manchuria contributed to further aggressive hostilities between nations. It could also be proposed that had the
United States joined the League of Nations, certain military hostilities may have been averted because, at the time, the U.S. was the most powerful military force in the world. Further,
had the U.S. provided financial assistance to Europe after World War I, some of the aggressions may have been prevented. There was a large-scale economic collapse throughout the world
following World War I, which led to the rise of fascism throughout Europe. The Great Depression decimated the economies of both Europe and the United States, also providing fertile ground
for the rise of fascism. Hitlers version of fascism was focused on reversing the Versailles Treaty and expanding the German Empire through war and conquest. As an ideology, fascism glorified
