the two wars. The differences and similarities become immediately apparent in reviewing practically any book on the first half of this centurys history. In The American Century: The United States Since the 1890s the authors Walter LaFeber; Richard Polenberg; and Nancy Woloch identify several of these contrasts and similarities. These include: 1. Although one of the primary causes of World War I was a rise in the concept of nationalism in the various European countries which would become embroiled in the war, the sense of nationalism in World War II was much higher in the United States than it was in World War I. 2. Both World War I and World War II resulted in an economic boom to American society once they were culminated. 3. Both World War I and World War II required tremendous sacrifice on the part of the American public. In World War II, however, the rationing of various goods made necessary by the war was felt heavily by all Americans while rationing was not implemented in World War I. World War I spanned a four year period between 1914 and 1918. Nearly ten million lives were lost. World War I resulted from a variety of causes. The most prominent of these was the rise of nationalism. People of common geographic origin, language, and history began to see themselves as members of large cultural affiliations. What had previously been small isolated states of people began to unite into nations. Italy and Germany were formed as a direct result of Nationalism.
