The First World War had impacts not just on the areas embroiled in the warfare but on the world as
a whole. The troops that fought that war experienced some of the most horrendous days of their lives. Civilians back home were torn apart by the war in
many ways as well. Industry was geared to the war and even the recreational aspect of life back home changed to reflect the impacts of the war. As
horrible as the war was, however, human beings are resilient creatures. Both the civilians in the era and the men that fought the war demonstrate that fact quite successfully.
Warfare is never pretty. Lynn, Martin, Rosenwein, and Smith (787) emphasize "when fighting did break out, the trenches became a veritable hell
of shelling and sniping, flying body parts, blinding gas, and rotting cadavers". Soldiers reacted to such horrors differently. Some were blinded by their anger and relentlessly focused on
killing. Others withdrew psychologically. Still others became hysterical. Back home, of course, people were feeling the war as well.
