On February 21, 1916, the Battle of Verdun began, it would last until December 16, 1916 (History Learning Site, 2003). It was the longest single battle in the war (History Learning Site, 2003). The Battle of the Somme was initiated by the British in an effort to take the German pressure off the French at Verdun (History Learning Site, 2003). The Germans attacked Verdun because German Chief of General Staff, von Falkenhayn wanted to "bleed France white" (History Learning Site, 2003). He chose Verdun because of its historic sentiment to the French (History Learning Site, 2003). Falkenhayn believed the French would lose so many soldiers at Verdun, because they would staunchly defend it that it "would change the course of the war" (History Learning Site, 2003). In the end, the French lost 133,000 men and the Germans lost 120,000 men (History Learning Site, 2003). General Sir Douglas Haig was Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) (All Science Fair Projects, 2004). Haig preferred to launch an offensive action in Flanders but the British conceded to the French preferences (All Science Fair Projects, 2004). The decision was made in February to launch an offensive by both British and French armies in Picardy along the Somme River (All Science Fair Projects, 2004). Before they could act, the Germans attacked Verdun (All Science Fair Projects, 2004). The French troops moved to support action at Verdun and Somme was left to the British by necessity (All Science Fair Projects, 2004).
