but it is also an organization which many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have problems with. The following paper examines the strengths and weaknesses of the WTO, the necessity of the WTO
in relationship to GATT and why NGOs are often doubtful of the effectiveness of the WTO. World Trade Order The WTO was created in 1995 to presumably improve
on actions previously maintained by GATT. One of the most argued strengths it the ability to resolve disputes. It allows for the small and developing economies to have the "opportunity
to obtain a fair hearing without being a subject to threats from bigger countries" and also offers "intellectual property rights which were included in TRIPS and were not included in
GATT - in a lot of countries it is something that doesnt exist, but if the country is willing to join WTO it must accept the TRIPS" (History of GATT
and WTO, 2004). In terms of some of the weaknesses we see that there is no mechanism that is designed for determining the influence a particular member has in relationship
to the particular countrys economy (History of GATT and WTO, 2004). It does not allow for particular countries in need, such as Russia, to become members if they do not
meet the criteria: "insistence on food self-sufficiency in developing country members....insufficient liberalization of foreign direct investment" (History of GATT and WTO, 2004). As it relates to GATT in terms
