In fact, the authors explain that the coup was not unexpected (Crossley, Lees, & Servos, 2004). To some extent, it was the climate of the day that would exacerbate such
events. The incident was blamed largely on economics (Crossley, Lees, & Servos, 2004). These facts, and others, are relayed in the context of a chapter entitled "D?tente to Dissarry: The
Breakdown of the Bipolar World, 1969-1981" (Crossley, Lees, & Servos, 2004, p.422). The overthrow of the government was sanctioned by the United States, but it would soon be learned that
things were not quite good and the situation turned out to be an embarrassment to the U.S. (Crossley, Lees, & Servos, 2004). In fact, after the Allende government was overthrown
by Pinochet, political repression would be the norm (McSherry, 2005). Authors go on to explain that this event, and the situation in Chile in general, serves as a metaphor. Authors
write: "But the tragic history of the Allende government also offers a parable about the seam between the 1960s and 1970s. The most remarkable feature of the 1960s was the
number of people in many parts of the world who entertained extravagant hopes for a better future" (Crossley, Lees, & Servos, 2004, p.424). The change in terms of how the
world would view the future was an important change. Since the turn of the twentieth century, there had been hardship. The early portion of the century held the First World
War, and then the second. It would only be in the 1950s, well after the Great Depression, that the world would become more optimistic. Overthrowing corrupt governments was a part
of the new optimism. At the same time, it was an era of d?tente and this is perhaps the most important emphasis of the chapter in the book by Crossley,
