Other workers in life and death professions such as police officers and firefighters also must take precautions so that safety is accounted for. For example, officers at least at one time and in some jurisdictions are told to shoot to kill. It is for their own protection. Even the Diallo incident in New York that saw a swarm of officers shoot an unarmed man ended in an acquittal. Why? The officers thought they were in danger. In such professions, the individual workers safety is of the utmost importance. Officers must save their own lives and that can be challenging. Most people do not work in these high risk jobs. What of the ordinary individual? How does he or she fare in terms of workplace safety? What does an employer have to do in order to render a safe environment? Things from fire prevention to precautions about machinery use are commonplace. Rules and regulations are a part of the work atmosphere. Many regulations are designed with safety in mind. In general, the Department of Labor does promote the idea of workplace health and safety and they do this through a variety of educational and compliance initiatives ("Department," 2004). Prevention, information gathering and monitoring are some of the things that the departments do in a cooperative effort to create a liaison between employers, government, employers employees (2004). The primary goal of these organizations is to reduce the number of potential accidents and also to improve productivity (2004).
