the economy can be an ominous task for those at the helm of a dwindling workforce. With money tight and hours long, workers can feel as though their additional responsibilities and contributions are an expectation for which they have little control: either they carry tremendous workloads with sometimes impossible deadlines or they start looking for another job in a current job market that offers very little (Holmes, 2005). Indeed, this may cause some to feel there is no way out of the cyclical high-stress, high-performance position they must endure just to bring home a paycheck. It might not seem like much, but a "thank you" can go a long way. Make sure your employees know they are appreciated. If they feel like theyre being recognized for their hard work, they are less likely to feel burned out (Holmes, 2005). Keeping morale high is the first step to take from a proactive perspective, inasmuch as employees are much more likely and willing to perform expected role behaviors when they are treated with respect, acknowledged for their performance and made to feel an important part of the overall company objective (Atkinson, 2005). Treating an employee like a nameless, faceless drone will no more motivate positive productive behaviors than will beating a dead horse; rather, employees require that positive connection through industrial relations if HRM wants them to conform to desired role behaviors. If HRM represents the heart of a company, then it only stands to reason that effective leaders are the driving force behind any strategic plan.
