slaves. This was primarily attributable to economic reasons, but the contempt for the newly freed black man was certainly felt. Fast forward to the twenty-first century and while racism persists,
there are new, legal remedies to handle the problem, particularly in the workplace. And while that is the case, racism has not been eradicated. In fact, the truly systemic form
of racism only became hegemonic after the end of slavery (Fox-Genovese 246). The civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, along with the legislation that emerged from
it, not only abolished institutional racism in the United States but it seriously discredited the most pervasive and debilitating racist attitudes in existence (Fox-Genovese 246). While true, there are some
remnants of racism that linger and one sees this in some police departments for example. At the same time, one must admit that the world has changed
and racism is not present everywhere. Jeansonne says that " the greatest breakthrough for blacks, Jews, Hispanics and other minorities was the nations realization that the ultimate consequence of racism
was exposed in the death camps of Hitler" (Jeansonne 20). She explains that the knowledge of Hitlers genocide which was based on racial supremacy destroyed the theoretical underpinnings of American
racism (20). This is a nice thought, but while things have changed to an extent, by no means has racism been destroyed completely. Between the militias which spout white supremacy
to Al Sharptons complaints about bigotry, there is no doubt that racism is present today. A good example of the existence of the color line is when the OJ Simpson
